snoring...the beginning

One morning, when I was in law school, my friend Jim walked into our school civil practice clinic and slumped down next to me with a look of defeat. He looked up at me and matter-of-factly stated “Pregnant women snore.”
His wife was pretty far along at that point and I attempted to sympathize with him, but I really thought it was funny.
Tonight, I should be sleeping. Tomorrow is going to be an early day and a long day. But I can’t go to bed until I finish watching Andre Agassi win this darn match. (I am a huge tennis fan but I have never seen the entire crowd at a tennis event do the wave, it’s a pretty cool thing to see).
I digress.
As I am fighting to stay awake for this match, Lois passed out. And she is snoring. And I think it’s freaking adorable.
I have a feeling I will not think it’s adorable forever, but it’s cute right now.

fluttering out of denial

This is an actual phone conversation that just took place:

Lois: Don’t get excited, but I might have just felt something.

Holly: Really!?!? What did it feel like?

Lois: It was like a gas bubble, but I was busy playing my computer game at work. By the time I realized it, it was gone.

Holly: That could be Chubby, Lo.

Lois: Now, I’m scared. I am so in denial, you have no idea! I have so been in denial this whole time.

Holly: oh, I’ve been aware of that.

Lois: I told K (co-worker) that I thought I felt something and she said “why do you look like you are going to cry?”

Lois: I am really in such denial that this is even happening.

Holly: It is happening, dear. We did this on purpose, remember?

(This is one of those moments that I am glad I decided to keep a blog and document this stuff)

boy or girl revisited a/k/a really scientific tests

I made the mistake of doing a web search on baby gender prediction. Again, we don’t care either way, but I became fascinated by the crap out there. Do people believe this stuff?
Of course some of these results must be true and you figure the predictions have a 50% chance of being right, so the odds are in the publishers’ favor.

This Chinese Gender Chart says BOY and so does this one.

About.com says you are having a boy if:
· you are carrying your baby low
· the baby is very active
· you are craving salt
· a wedding ring suspended on a string over your belly rocks back and forth and not in a circle
· the baby's heart rate is less than 140 beats per minute
· you didn't have a lot of morning sickness in the first trimester
· your feet are cold

Not really any of these apply to Lois.

I also read these:
- Drop a key on the floor, if mommy picks it up by skinny end, it’s one thing, if the fat end it’s another (can’t remember which is which)
- Is daddy (or co-mommy?) gaining weight too?

Many of these sites require payment to find out your gender prediction results. Don’t think I need to go that far!

Fortunebaby.com charges $17.95 for “scientifically proven results” but that includes a relaxation CD.

Boy or Girl.com only charges $2.99 but I still don’t know if I care enough.

There are also books on the subject….

Boy or Girl? – 50 Fun Ways to Find Out and
Baby Girl or Baby Boy?

Here’s another one from About.com

First of all you have to know the date that you OVULATED by that, you have to know the first day of you LMP then you take how old you are on the day you ovulated and add the numbers together.
EXAMPLE:
EXAMPLE:
My LMP was Feb 18 Thursday 1998
Ovulation Date March 4th 1998
Age at the time was 29
That equals 33
Even numbers mean a girl baby
Odd numbers mean a boy baby

I think I get it….
Lois’ LMP was May 10 Wednesday 2006
Ovulation Date was May 25 2006
Age at the time was 38
That equals 63?

So it’s a boy, right?

And Finally….

We took the test at Childbirth.org and here are our results!

You have a 26% Chance it’s a boy
You have a 73% Chance it’s a girl

And Here's Why...

-You are carrying the extra weight around the hips and bottom, so it's a girl.
-The hair on your legs is not growing any faster during your preganacy, so it's a girl.
-Girls are carried high. You are going to have a girl.
-Sleeping in a bed with your pillow to the north indicates that you will be having a boy.
-Your feet are not colder than they were before pregnancy. You are having a girl.
-You prefer the heel of a loaf of bread. You are having a boy.
-Dad-to-be hasn't been gaining weight along with Mom-to-be, so it will be a girl.
-The maternal grandmother has gray hair, so a boy will be born.
-You had morning sickness early in pregnancy, so you are expecting a girl.
-You are looking particularly good during pregnancy. Therefore, it must be a boy, because girls steal their mother's looks.
-Your chest development has been quite dramatic during pregnancy. You should expect a girl.
-Since the sum of the mother's age at conception and the number of the month of conception is an odd number, it will be a girl.
-A needle on a thread held over you belly moves from side-to-side, so it will be a girl.
-Your urine is a bright neon yellow color, so you will have a boy.
-You are craving sweets, which means that it is a girl.
-Your nose hasn't changed during pregnancy, which indicates a girl.
-You have been craving fruits, so it is a girl.
-Your baby's heart rate is 140 or more beats per minute, so it's a girl.
-You must have orange juice every day, so it's a girl.
-You are not having headaches, so it's a girl.
-Your belly looks like a watermelon, so it's a girl.
-You show them the palm of your hand, so it's a girl.
-You use the handle, so it's a boy.

So, it’s a girl? And I’m right!!!! (Lois still thinks Chubby is a boy!)

As you may notice, 73% and 26% does not equal 100%. Does this mean there’s a 1% chance we are having a puppy?

your partner is pregnant survival kit

I want to send a big thank you and shout out to Billy & Loren.
For my 30th birthday, I was presented with a “your significant other is pregnant” survival kit.
It including gift certificates to McDonald’s, Duchess and Dunkin Donuts.
As I sit and sip my large DD toasted almond coffee with 2 splendas and milk on a rainy, crappy day,
all I can say is...I am so grateful!! So grateful!

maternity clothes and feeling full!

I think it’s funny when Lois gets another noticeable symptom of pregnancy. I really don’t think that Lois believed that things would happen to her that happens to every other pregnant woman. She repeatedly is surprised when we notice things, like a growing waistline.

While the morning sickness has subsided a little (I keep reminding Lois how bad it was and how this is better), she is starting to get a few more pregnancy signs that are the growing signs, not miserable signs.

Apparently, the clothes need to get a little bigger. Lois is determined not to go out and buy clothes, so she can wear mine for a little while. But she doesn’t want the cute maternity stuff, she thinks she can just wear bigger and bigger sweatpants and button-down shirts. We shall see.

This weekend, she relented a little and we went bra shopping. We started at Target and ended up at Kohls. It turns out we were impatient shoppers and we missed the maternity bras and went straight for the regular bras in bigger sizes.

Lois settled on a comfy bra that was a size 38D. I giggled a little at this. I giggled even more when we got home and she tried it on. It may be a little too snug. Looks like we will have to go bigger!

Then, she got on the scale on Sunday morning. Remember my post on Friday about gaining 1 pound so far. From Friday to Sunday, she gained 4 pounds!!

Now, Lois does not look pregnant yet. Since I know she is, I think she looks pregnant, but she said she just looks fatter. (I think she looks wonderful, but she gives me a nasty look when I say that!)

Every so often, she will feel exceptionally full after eating and it’s less than her normal dining experience. She equates it to overeating at the Nordic Lodge and feeling like you ate so much you can barely breathe.

I am trying to absorb as much of this pregnancy experience as possible without laughing at all of her little idiosyncrasies.

BTW – I went with Suz to Babies R Us to buy Kaden a Halloween costume and I can’t wait until we are putting our little bundle of joy into a little lobster outfit, or pea pod or dinosaur or chicken costume. That will be one of those pictures that is so unbelievably cute we will want to share with Chubby’s girlfriend/boyfriend when Chubby is 16 years old!

picking names

In other news, we picked a boy’s name! It will remain a mystery to readers for a little while longer, but it all came together when we picked a middle name. (sorry)

The middle name will be the same whether Chubby is a boy or a girl.

Now, we need to work on a girl’s name.

I think I’ve said this before, but Lois has a thing for Danica Patrick (the Indy car driver) and wanted the name Danica. I have never particularly cared for that name. But now, with our decision on the middle name, it doesn’t seem that Danica will work, so I have an opening to come up with something else!!

How exciting!

weight gain

Lois got on the scale yesterday and at 15 weeks of pregnancy and now the “bloated” feeling, I can report that from her pre-pregnancy weight until now she has gained a whopping 1 pound!
She doesn’t get it, since she feels fatter.
I keep telling her that if she didn’t throw up her one meal a day every day for the first 3 months, she would be even fatter…LOL, totally kidding.
On the other hand, I am eating all the same stuff she is, but not throwing it all up, so I have already gained 7 lbs during her pregnancy.
I am working on it though and embarrassingly enough started a weight loss blog that will hopefully be motivation to get my butt in gear.

a little friendly wager

It appears that Lois and I are going to have a little wager going on with this boy/girl thing.

As I said, I really think it’s a girl. Lois seems to have some feeling that it’s a boy. (BTW – I am convinced that Salina is having a boy, sorry Benji!)

We don’t care either way. Maybe we’ve had one or two conversations where we expressed that maybe we would want a boy (remember Lois has the 10 year old twin girls already). But, if Chubby is a girl, we will be just as ecstatic and promise not to try and return her to where she came from.

Like I said before, my concern about having a girl is that she will hate football, want to paint her room pink, dress like Britney Spears, love to shop and hate the Yankees. Plus, Lois has had a girl’s name picked out since we started TTCing and I have a feeling I will eventually crack (even though I am not a big fan).

Then again, we could have a boy who likes pink and wants to be a cheerleader. Needless to say, it’s a good thing we have some straight girlfriends.

I digress…

We are placing a wager on this. What better way to start out as parents - on the road to teaching our future child valuable moral lessons in life - then to gamble.

Lois is thinking about a possible wager. The wheels are turning in my head as well….
I’m thinking if I win, I get to drive her new car for a week and maybe if she wins, I cook for her (ummm, maybe that’s not a great prize).

guessing game

I am convinced we are having a girl. Lois is convinced it’s a boy!
While we still have time to find out, I am looking at the # of guesses in our Chubbys expectnet.com game. Not a ton, but enough to warrant the conversation of “what will the prize be???”
I, for one, like Bevin’s suggestion that the winner gets to babysit Chubby while Chubby’s mommies go on a post-baby moon getaway.
I do understand that to some people, babysitting isn’t necessarily an exciting prize. I also must contemplate the fact that the winner may not have easy access to the State of Connecticut, so the door is now open to suggestions.
It can be something like a basket of cookies to a virtual prize, let the ideas flow!

getting my yankee on!

I don’t get into my baseball fanaticisms with too many people.
Our entire office is mostly NY Yankee fans (Lois is a Mets fan!) and our firm actually has tickets behind home plate at Yankee Stadium (they’re for clients, not us!)

Now, the one and only Red Sox fan in our office has been RELENTLESS this year!

Friday morning, he was bouncing off the walls after the Yankees lost to the Orioles and kept saying the Yankees were headed for a huge losing streak.

So, I just posted this on my door in retaliation.

freaking out about $$

'99 VW Passat 4-cyl, 1.8 turbo, dark green, tan leather interior, FWD, auto w/ tiptronic, a/c, pwr sunrf, 6-cd, 132k miles, good condition, new tires
anyone interested!?!?

I posted the car in the classifieds starting Wednesday. Hopefully, someone will bite and give us more $$ than the dealer would. We’ll see. We’re not buying the new car until September, so we have time to freak out about spending money.

And we are freaking out about spending money.

Poor Lois woke up at 2 am (I was in dreamland bliss after taking 2 Tylenol PM’s) last night having heart palpitations about the following:

“what we will do for income when she’s not working when the baby’s born”
“Money when she goes back to work at a job making less than she does now”
“paying for day care”
“paying for car property taxes”
“paying the mortgage”
“paying for diapers”
etc.
etc.
etc.

I got frustrated this morning and was like, “then don’t get a new car, hang on to this and keep your fingers crossed” and “do you really think you will want to be home for several months?” and “you could always work from home” and “we could refinance the condo” (it’s still new construction, so we already talked about refinancing when the whole development is done and the rates will be lower).

She’s terrified of debt. I am of the mindset that everyone has debt, ours is pretty good (other than my colossal undergrad and law school loans) and that we don’t have to pay everything off in a year, we can pay minimum payments if things get tight.

What do couples fight about?

Oh yeah, sex and money. And I gave up fighting about sex years ago.

I spoke to a friend this afternoon and was like “I know we will make things work out, we will be okay, but I don’t know how to say that to Lois.”

She was like “you are such the guy, needing to respond. Just let her vent, no need to say anything at all.”

So, I will let her vent. Needless to say, I am freaked out too, but I am more of a one day at a time type person where Lois wants to have the plan for February and March completely water tight and perfect.

Many of these decisions (baby and home) were made when we thought I would be making more money at this point, but things happen. Maybe things will shift the other way, we’ll make it work.

When I look at what we’ve been through in the last 6 ½ years (taking her ex to court for visitation of the twins, Lois losing her job at IP when they went under, going to law school, making $8/hour only 15 hours a week, loans, Lois driving to and from Jersey to visit, being homeless for 7 months, the miscarriage, at least one badly wrecked car, etc.), we can do this. It’s just another challenge that we will conquer.

Eat a Big Mac!!!

Lois just called me to ask if I thought it was okay if she had a Big Mac for lunch.

"Are you kidding? Have a Big Mac! At least it is something you want to eat for a change! This is your time to have an excuse to eat one, go for it!"

"But I feel fat!"

"You are pregnant. Eat a Big Mac, feel fat and happy and don't feel guilty for a second!"

"Ok"

I smiled for awhile after I hung up thinking about her driving to McDonald's happy as a clam. For the first time in a while, she feels good and actually is looking forward to food, any food.

But, did she really need to call me for permission to eat one?

My sister told me that she ate Taco Bell at least 2 meals a day throughout her entire pregnancy with my nephew. Maybe that's why he can't sit still at 11 years old....;-)

making it work

I’ve given a quick overview of our car situation on livejournal.

The long and short of it is that I’ve had a few things swirling around in my head during this "gotta get a new car" thing.

Based on the fact that Lois will not be working for a period of time when Chubby comes, spending $$ on anything is scary.

I have been of the "get the least expensive car with our needs" thought for a while, but have made a shift.

We have a child on the way now.

We need a car that’s 4 door, AWD, automatic, reliable and safe, safe, safe. Probably an SUV. It’s gotta last, it’s gotta be comfortable.

Making a decision about a car now is not about what we as a couple want or need or want to spend right now decision. It’s a decision that involves a baby.

I’m usually the fiscally irresponsible one, Lois is the smart money one. Now, I am balking at the idea of spending more than $250/month on a car. (The last 3 cars I owned cost less than $250 a month. You can’t get that anymore.)

I’m a little scared, but I remember friends in law school, full-time students with spouses, only one income, pregnant/having children, buying homes, needing new cars, etc. They just made it work.

Whatever the decision comes down to (we’ll probably know tonight if we are in love with this car that we both want), we will make it work.

"I'm going to get everything!!!"

Had to do two quick posts this morning since I've been slacking.

Lois is convinced now that she is going to have every single thing that comes with pregnancy.

Yesterday morning, after waking up to a nosebleed, she declared, "I’m going to have everything, aren’t I? Soon, I’ll have hemorrhoids and varicose veins!"
This morning, she added, "and my body isn’t changing all that much yet, can you imagine what’s going to happen?"

Ahhhh...pregnancy.

Let’s review: she’s been through morning sickness (still has it really, but she’s able to eat a meal here and there unlike weeks ago), she’s exhausted, cranky, whiney, and now the heartburn is getting worse. She’s always been a great sleeper (something I’m usually jealous of) but now, she’s restless, tossing and turning, waking up and not being able to fall back asleep, etc.

As for the body changes, we have no idea what her boobs weighed before this ordeal (maybe 1-1.5 lbs each), but they are up to 2.5 lbs each (yes, we weighed them).
She feels bloated, constantly mentions that she feels fat and miserable and at every sigh and groan, she apologizes for being a "whiney baby."

Then, I proceed to tell her,
"you are not a whiney baby, you are growing a life inside of you and that happens to take a little out of you" and
"you are not fat, you are pregnant and beautiful" and
"it’s a wonderful thing to be creating a life, remember that" and, finally
"of course, I’m not going to leave you."

I would giggle and tell her that I think all of this is cute, but I’m afraid she’ll slug me.

cute pregnant women

We went to a baby shower on Sunday with Lois’ family. Her cousin’s wife is due early October and she is “cute pregnant.” There she is 5 foot nothing, wearing the cutest little maternity tank top. She looks like she’s gained absolutely no weight, except for her cute little belly. How adorable.
Lois looked at me when I said, “Lo, check out that little tank top and cute outfit, what do you think?”
I can’t quite explain it, but she gave me a “fuck you” sort of look and declared “as I am getting fat, I will be wearing big baggy sweatpants and tent-like shirts.”
…And probably running over any “cute pregnant” women she sees with her car.

u/s pics from 13 week scan - FINALLY

We FINALLY got the pics back from Lois' parents, and FINALLY got to use a scanner.
The following are the pics from our 13 week scan.
Now, remember from the previous post that the u/s tech wanted Chubby to be in a certain position to measure the back of the neck. It took close to 30 minutes to get Chubby in that position.
OK world, here's Chubby!!!!

Here's the best picture, but with legs crossed, can't tell if it's a Chubby or a Chubbette.

Here's one particular favorite position of Chubby. The Chubbster does like pushing off the bottom of the uterus to spin back up to the top. (Can't wait until Lois starts feeling that!)

Front view...look at the little hands!!!!!

Blurry pictures, but with the left hand in the air, I swear Chubby was waving at us.

Last, but not least, the absolute opposite position from whence we started, ASS IN THE AIR MOONING MOMMIES!!!!

she feels pregnant

last night I had one of those moments and i tried explaining it to Lois, not sure if she thought I was lame, crazy or if I was insulting her...
we usually end up in a right side spoon when we fall asleep. she's on the right side of the bed, so I spoon from behind, cute, right?
Anyway, last night, maybe it was because we saw so much movement from Chubby (the baby) in the U/S this week, maybe because she is starting a little puffy belly thing, maybe because her boobs have gotten so big, I don't know...
I rolled over, spooned her and had this "oh my...she's pregnant!" thought. Not a realization thought but more physical. It was more real to me I guess and I kept squeezing her. I don't know how to put it, but she felt pregnant to me, not just the 'you peed on a stick and you're pregnant' feeling, but that 'things are changing and she's really pregnant!' feeling. Is that weird?
I don't know, but it was soft and cuddly and wonderful. Am I nuts?

this scary world

after watching the news this morning, i tortured myself by listening to headline news on the XM radio (love my xm radio...love the shameless plug here)the entire ride to work. (the world is so much safer with W. as prez)
well, 1/2 of the drive i was chatting with Suz (baby Kaden's mommy) and we both made comments about bringing children into this crazy mixed up world. what are we thinking?
my parents are flying to scotland today and i gave my mother a hard time about bringing her usual purse filled with crap and no water bottles. her response was something like "well, it's probably the safest day to fly."
and tomorrow, my brother and sister-in-law leave for Paris. i think they are crazy. not crazy for flying right now, crazy for going with a 2.5 year old in the hottest month of the year, did i mention my sister-in-law is 6 months pregnant?
just kidding, i hope they have fun. (and bring their favorite lesbian family member back a shot glass)!!
what a world traveling family, huh?
I feel a little left out. Maybe I should travel to CVS or OfficeMax and get those darn u/s pictures scanned so I can show everyone?!?!?

looking good!

Today was the 1st trimester screen and I made it there! It was a good thing, because Chubby was moving so much and we were so excited that Lois said she never would have been able to explain it to me!!!
We won't get the blood tests back for a little while but everything looked good. Chubby is over 3 inches long and VERY active. Chubby moved every which way except the certain position the tech was hoping for to get the measurement behind the head.
We did see two arms, two legs, 10 fingers, 10 toes, we saw Chubby with the head down, butt in the air and backside and frontside and legs crossed and every other possible way.
It was incredible!
If I owned a scanner, I would have posted a pic or two tonight, but I gotta work on that. The tech gave us like 20 pictures...mostly because so many were blurry since Chubbs didn't want to stay in one place for very long.
I left before the blood test to attend a "closing from hell" but chatted with Loey most of the drive there about how excited we were. Lois is like "wow, there really is a baby in there!"
Like, the morning sickness wasn't eye opening enough.
More to come soon...

new ob

Yesterday, Lois had an appt. at the OB’s office with the new doc. And I mean the brand spanking new doc.
Apparently, it was a little of a cluster fuck with the doc not knowing where the tape measure was. Lois asked for an ultrasound and she didn’t know how to turn it on…she was too afraid what a debacle it would create to ask for a picture from the u/s.
There was a little scare as it took her 1 minute (in Lois’ head, it was 10 minutes) to find the heartbeat using the Doppler, but it was there.
But she got to see Chubby - - and Chubby was moving!!! She got a big left arm wave from the Chubbster saying "Hello Mommy, I’m here!!!"
I, however, missed this since Lois had that appt. yesterday and the 1st Trimester screening today, I figured I would go to the screen.
That was supposed to be at 9 am, but the tech won’t be in this morning and our appt. was switched to 1:40 pm (if we checked our answering machine last night, we would have known this before 7 am this morning).
My boss is frantically trying to help me make this appt. this afternoon which will involve some chaos this morning and a potential return to the office at 5 pm today after a closing that I really don’t want to do. And somehow between all of this, I will learn how to represent a client in an administrative appeal which I will be doing tomorrow morning.
But what really matters is that I will get to see Chubby today!!!
Life, frantic…I keep imagining what it will be like with a kid!!! ;-)

belly laughs

My U button is working...for now. I have to pound it really hard to get it to work. Picture me trying to write a light-hearted blog entry while frantically stabbing at a certain button on my keyboard.
- - -
Salina (who is due 10 days after us) gave Lois a little care package baggie and in it was Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy.
I am not exactly a big fan of Jenny McCarthy, but figured I would read it for fun.
I just started reading it and it is hysterical. Just thought I would recommend it to anyone out there interested in getting a break from the "What to Expect...", "The Pregnancy Book" and "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" books.
As one of the critics says, it is "chatty and crude" but sometimes, we all need a little of that, right?
I'll have a better book review when I'm done!

What the hell is wrong with people?
And the women who are hiding this magazine from their h_sbands!?!? Why? Yo_ are getting the magazine beca_se yo_ are having or will have a baby. now the column on the left is too narrow.
dammit.

12 weeks

Chubby is 12 weeks today!!!

From Babycenter.com…
How your baby's growing: Your baby's hit the 2-inch mark (about the size of a lime) and weighs half an ounce. Her face is beginning to look more human. Her eyes, which started out on the sides of her head, have moved closer together on her face, and her ears are near their final positions on the sides of her head…

It’s very exciting to see the growth. The last ultrasound at 8 weeks, we felt sheepish and silly showing people because it was like “here’s the head, I think, and I think some legs or it’s butt or something.” It’s not like we weren’t excited, but it’s a little more exciting when it starts to look more like a baby.

This made me laugh…

You may also start getting heartburn (also called acid indigestion), a burning sensation that often extends from the bottom of your breastbone to your lower throat. It's caused by both hormonal and physical changes in your body — and can take the pleasure out of eating a meal or sleeping. Eating small meals and avoiding foods that make the problem worse, such as fried, spicy, or fatty foods, can help.

Starting to get heartburn? Lois has had heartburn for the past 5 weeks. And, the avoiding fried, spicy or fatty foods? You have got to be kidding.
On the short list of things Lois is willing to eat are nachos, chicken nuggets, chicken parm grinders, home fries, etc.
Yes, she does get heartburn afterwards, but the heartburn seems to be outweighed by the not starving thing.

So, here we are at 12 weeks. This gives me heart palpitations. Lois’ miscarriage with Ziggy (first pregnancy) happened at 12 weeks, 3 days.

As I have said before, Lois was not feeling that the pregnancy with Ziggy was “the one” but she feels that Chubby is “the one.” So, she is not as nervous as I am, but how can you not think about it?

We haven’t bought one thing this time around (we only bought one or two things last time as well) and probably won’t buy anything for a few more weeks.

But I will feel a little better when this week passes and a week from today am announcing Chubby’s 13th week! Then I will be a little worrywart until the 26 week point, then until the 36 week point, 40 week point, giving birth point, then for the rest of my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!
